SM 4205 Intro

My name is Sha'Da Wafer and I have finally reached my senior year at Bowling Green State University and I'm embracing my well deserved senior status!! I am a Kinesiology major with a specialization in exercise science. I hope to graduate at the end of the summer 2010 semester and enter into the career world as a personal trainer. My hopes with my career is to one day own my own personal training facility where I can build a clientele of people within the community as well as athletes of all ages. I love studying the body especially the anatomy and physiology aspects of it because I find it fascinating how each system works harmoniously together though it is extremely complicated. This passion of mine began the summer before my sophomore year in high school where I had the opportunity to work on a human cadaver!!! (probably one of the most memorable experiences of my life). In addition to the overall anatomy of the human body I am also very interested in how the body moves in relation to sport and exercise. I love watching sports such as, football, basketball, and cheerleading, but mainly football. In high school I participated in a few sports such as volleyball, softball, and was a cheerleader. I am currently taking a class on sport and gender which I hope to gain more knowledge on how sport differs and how sport is the same for both genders. We have already read some pretty interesting articles, and one that I found really interesting is the controversial idea of what is sport actually defined as!! Our class came up with various definitions, which included characteristics such as a competition, athleticism, opposing forces, physical activity, a set of rules, organized activity, skill and knowledge of the game, and a defining point of victory. Now the controversy arises when you consider the fact that there are so many activities that fit these characteristics, but are not considered a "real sport" for example two activities were brought up in a class activity: ballroom dancing and stacking. Both require alot of skill and competition and many of the other characteristics of sport, but most people they would not come to mind when you consider sports. I personally feel that the world of sports has evolved so much over the past decades that there is no longer no real concise definition of sport. I believe that there are sports and then there are competitive games, but according to the way our culture has changed, I don't believe sport has the same distinction any longer.

  1. Hi Sha Da,

This is a great introductory entry for your blog. I am glad that you have finally reached "senior status." And I think your interest in becoming a personal trainer sounds great. How did you happen to get to work on a human cadaver? I cannot fathom what that would be like.

I also thought you had some great reflections on our discussion about what is sport. I agree with your observations about how sports and games have evolved.

I look forward to reading more of your entries. Great job!

    Dr. Spencer

  2. Thanks!!

The program that I entered into was called Science Apprenticeship Program in Dayton, Ohio that took place at Wright State University. It really was an amazing experience that I learned so much from!!
